The SSP Pumps brand has a long and distinguished history, traced back to the Howard Pump Company. Founded in Eastbourne, the company developed the rotary lobe pump concept, launching the first product on to the market during the post war years of the 1940’s. The rotary lobe pump concept probably developed from the similarly designed Roots blower, which is famously associated with the supercharged Blower Bentleys that dominated motor racing in England and at Le Mans in the late 1920’s and early ‘30s.

In 1958 ex-employees of the Howard Pump Company founded Stainless Steel Pumps Ltd, developing their own rotary lobe pump designs. When materials began to be used other than stainless steel the name of the company was changed to SSP Pumps Ltd. In 1987 SSP Pumps Ltd was acquired by the Alfa Laval organisation.

SSP Pumps was the first company to introduce 125mm, 150mm, 200mm, 250mm and 300mm diameter ported rotary lobe pumps, as well as the first with ductile iron versions.
